Detective Client JNL

There is no doubt that the 1941 version of “The Maltese Falcon” was superior to the prior two attempts by Warner Brothers at filming Dashiell Hammett’s 1930 novel.

Sam Spade was perfectly portrayed by Humphrey Bogart, and the supporting cast of Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, Sidney Greenstreet and Elisha Cook, Jr. rounded out the main players in a great suspense film that is considered to be the first (if not one of the first) of the film noir genre.

The title cards for the production and cast credits were hand-lettered in a spurred serif type style strongly reminiscent of the Art Nouveau period, so instead of naming the digital version with some “tough guy detective” moniker, it was decided that Detective Client JNL was more appropriate.

After all, this is a reasonably attractive font, and in this kind of film it’s usually the “attractive damsel in distress” [be she the victim or the actual perpetrator] that gets the story rolling…

Detective Client JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Carnival

Unlike the modest fonts in your menu content with discreetly imparting information, Carnival is conspicuous by design. Deliberately engineered to attract eyeballs, the typeface’s unmistakable silhouette produces a dramatic visual texture that stands out in print, on screen, or in any environment where your message demands to be noticed. The steady yet vibrant rhythm created by its letterforms also makes Carnival ideal for fashioning alphabet patterns and graphic devices.

Flaunting a lean slender body anchored by stout stroke endings, Carnival turns conventional typographic thinking on its head by inverting the relative thickness of its stems and serifs. This reverse-contrast approach stretches all the way back to the roots of modern advertising, when similar types became the favorite for posters, packaging, and loads of consumer products during the 1800s.

The striking style prevailed well into the next century, as Harold Horman, co-founder of New York City-based Photo-Lettering. Inc., modernized a version for the company’s popular film-typesetting service in the early 1940s. Digitized and expanded by Dan Reynolds in 2013, Carnival had previously been used exclusively for House Industries projects. Now you can get in on the action, and use this stunning slice of type history anytime you want your work to turn heads.

SUGGESTED USES

Carnival’s unique character commands attention, making it the perfect voice for promotional pieces, editorial design, labels, packaging, posters, and any other application that needs to strike the right tone.

Neutraface Display

Although better known for his residential buildings, Richard Neutra’s commercial projects nevertheless resonate the same holistic ecology—unity with the surrounding landscape and uncompromising functionalism. His attention to detail even extended to the selection of signage for his buildings. It is no wonder that Neutra specified lettering that was open and unobtrusive, the same characteristics which typified his progressive architecture. House Industries brings the same linear geometry to Neutraface without sacrificing an unmistakably warm and human feel.

FEATURES

  • LIGATURES: This feature is on by default. It will substitute a long list of “f” and “t” ligatures. For example, open InDesign or Photoshop and type “ff” or “tt”.
  • NEUTRAFACE DISPLAY ALTERNATES: Neutraface Display contains several stylistic alternate characters useful when a purely geometric setting is desired.

East

East is a sans serif condensed font. It has six weights between Light and Extra Bold. A variable font is also available.

Clarity and versatility make East a good choice for app design, branding, film titles, information, packages, posters, and publications. It is simple, friendly, and confident.

Its condensed design makes it easy to fit text in tight spaces. The light weight has excellent clarity for easy reading, even at small sizes. The Extra Bold weight will capture attention as a headline or large body text.

The name «East» is intended to evoke optimism, movement, travel, and the sunrise. It is timeless and current with a subtle nostalgia—inspired by the charming one-off sans serifs on early Jazz albums, film titles, newspapers, and road signage.

East has many OpenType features (please see slides). It offers eight stylistic sets. These can quickly alter large amounts of text. It has a set for a one-story “a” for simpler paragraph textures, and a set for hooked letters (f, j, l, r, t, y) for a warmer and playful personality. A seriffed uppercase I and 1 along with a slashed zero offer better legibility when needed. There are also sets for a curly German eszett, cap-aligned punctuation for Spanish, and a raised colon. Other OpenType alternates include; three different uppercase German eszetts, a tapered exclamation point, an alternate 4, standard ligatures, discretionary ligatures, a tapered asterisk, and a set of bullets (round, square, and diamond).

It also contains vertically stacked pre-built fractions. Diagonally built alternatives are offered for the common fractions (one quarter, one half, and three quarters, percent, per thousand).

It will support western and central European languages as well as other Latin-based written languages (check for your language). There are some Greek math-related glyphs and math symbols beyond the common ones.

Read on if you are not familiar with variable fonts.

What makes a variable font special is that all font weights are inside of one file and you can incrementally control the width and italic slant between Light (300) and ExtraBold (800). These changes are commonly made with slide controls in the font/type palette of the software. Variable fonts are also smaller in file size, benefitting both web and software performance.

Currently variable fonts are supported by Adobe, Sketch, Corel Draw, and most web browsers. Check for your software support here: www.v-fonts.com/support.
